Great Books at the Movies 2016 Contest!

To celebrate the release of the big-screen adaptations of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, The 5th Wave and A Monster Calls, our Library will be holding a contest giveaway of the original books that these three block-buster movies are based on plus one special prize.
 
The four prizes include:

One special movie edition of Ransom Rigg's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

One special movie edition of Rick Yancey's The 5th Wave

One copy of Patrick Ness' A Monster Calls

One autographed hardback copy of Veronica Roth's Divergent signed by Ms. Roth herself!
 
To enter the contest, you just need to checkout any print book or magazine from the Library during  November. Each time you checkout items from the Library, you’ll get a chance to fill out an entry ticket for the contest. The official drawing for the prizes will be held on Wednesday, November 30th, so get down to the Library and checkout a great book today!





 
SBHS Library celebrates Barlow Veterans

November 2016 Display
 
Barlow staff and their relatives share their experiences as veterans of the United States Armed Forces and Allied nations. This special display of service memorabilia and photos was made possible by contributions from our wonderful staff. This year's contributors include Mrs. Molony, Mrs. Ferron, Mrs. Ferguson, Mrs. Traxler, Mrs. Edens, Mrs. Nelms, Mr. Corkett and Mr. Wong.

El Dia de los Muertos Display

October 5th - November 1st 2016
 
 
MEChA Club advisor Karen Galicia Arroyo creates an outstanding El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) display in the Library. A Latin American holiday celebrated on November 1st, El Dia de los Muertos is a chance to remember departed friends and family members. Families typically set up altars decorated with photos and treasured objects of those who have passed and then gather at the cemetery to visit the graves of their loved ones in a happy celebration and renewal of loving ties with those who are gone. Banned Books Week Display


September 25th - October 1st 2016



 
For those of you who don't know, this Sept 25th through Oct 1st is national Banned Books Week. Begun in 1982, this is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read and calls attention to the attempts to deny access to books at libraries around the nation. You can see the display created by Mrs. Molony and pick up your own "I Read Banned Books" pin in the Library during this week. If you are looking to do some after-hours reading, our Barlow Library has great eBooks available all-year-round! Through a grant from the Gresham Barlow Education Foundation, our SBHS Library added over 50 new eBooks this summer to push our eBook collection to over 600 eBook titles available for student and staff use. Just use your school Google login and password to check out eBooks any time you want!

Author Veronica Roth visits Sam Barlow High School!

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth visited Barlow High School on February 29, 2016! Creator of the wildly popular Divergent series of young adult novels, Ms. Roth held a presentation/Q&A session in our auditorium with our students and staff. Ms. Roth shared her insights on the writing process and the need to be persistent in pursuing your dreams and aspirations. See below for images of Ms. Roth's visit to Barlow!
